Selecting a default portlet or item region

When users add content to a page via some other means than the Graphical or Layout view of the page, Oracle9iAS Portal needs to determine the region in which that content should be placed. For this purpose, a page has the concept of default regions. So, for example, if a user adds an item to a page using a WebDAV client, that user has no way of specifying the region in which to add that item. In this case, the item is added to the page's default item region.

You can also select default portlet and item regions at the page template level. Any page based on a template will use the default regions specified for its template (unless overridden in the page itself).

If you do not explicitly select a default item or portlet region, the defaults are the second such regions in the page. The second region is used to avoid placing content in regions intended for navigation elements. You may want to change the default item or portlet region to some other, more appropriate region in the page. If there is no portlet or item region, an undefined region is used as the default region. As soon as the content is added, the undefined region is typed according to the type of content.

To select a default region, you must have at least Manage privileges on the page or page template that contains the region.
