Centre for the Cooperation in the Mediterranean 10th anniversary
15-07-2015

The Centre for the Cooperation in the Mediterranean (CCM) celebrated its 10th anniversary during the Mediterranean Conference with the presence of IFRC President, Tataderu Konoé, the recently elected President of the Spanish Red Cross, Javier Senent, the former President of the Spanish Red Cross, and current President of the CCM, Juan Manuel Suárez del Toro, and Marta Corachán, CCM Vice-President.

Spanish Red Cross gave the institution's gold medal posthumously to Professor Mamdouh Gabr for "his constant interest and dedication to humanitarian causes in the Middle East, the Mediterranean region and the world." Professor  M. Gabr was Secretary General of the Egyptian Red Crescent until 2014, when he passed away. Professor Gabr was, as well, Vice-President of the IFRC and Vice-President of the CCM.

President Konoé highlighted how during 10 years "the Centre has encouraged efficient collaboration, provided opportunities for National Societies to share experiences and good practices, to transfer knowledge and develop new skills and areas of expertise, and served as a platform for the Red Cross and Red Crescent in the Mediterranean to develop common analysis, approaches and actions", remarking the Mediterranean Youth Camp Atlantis as possibly the best known example of the exchanges and partnerships facilitated by the Centre.

The Spanish Red Cross created the CCM in July 2005, following the 9th Mediterranean Conference celebrated in Cairo in 2004, where National Societies approved the foundation of a secretariat to provide a follow-up on the Conferences' resolutions. IFRC President recalled that "the Centre was established to make sure that the words that we say in these fora translate into meaningful action that strengthen National Societies and, ultimately, improve the lives of vulnerable communities."
