External contributions
15-07-2015

The participation of external partners and centres enriched the development of the 12th Mediterranean Conference.

The IFRC Livelihoods Centre gave an insight on resilience as an introduction to the "Crisis response and preparedness" session. On the other hand, during the workshop on "Climate Change and Environment" the RC/RC Climate Centre exposed the main factors and trends on the topic addressed, while the IFRC Secretariat presented its guidance for National Societies to engage in and address Climate Change and environmental degradation.

External contributions always give different points of view and new information. In this vein the Mediterranean Conference profited from the inputs and views on different topics from UNHCR, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Euro-Mediterranean Forum of Institutes of Economic Sciences (FEMISE) and the University of Sousse.

In the session "Assistance and protection to migrants", Mr. Beat Schuler, Senior Regional Protection Officer of UNHCR, updated the latest figures on migrants arriving to Italy and the numbers of refugees from Syria, as well as patterns emerging from the data collected by his agency. In the workshop on "Human Trafficking", Ms. Carlotta Santarrosa, monitoring expert at IOM, focused on mix migrations and trafficking in human beings, while Professor Hassen Boubakri, from the  University of Sousse (Tunisia), during the workshop "Migration and Youth", specially addressed how migration flows affect the Maghreb zone and the vulnerabilities faced by young migrants along their journey.

Professor Sergio Alessandrini from FEMISE, during the workshop related to the "Social effects of the Economic Crisis" exposed the comparative perspective on the social effects of the economic crisis and how the Euro-Mediterranean region has evolved in the recent decade.
