A degraded ecosystem affects both the quantity and quality of water, limiting its availability to be consumed by humans. Nowadays, 2.1 million people live without drinking water, what affects your health, education and livelihoods.
Currently more than 663 million people live without drinking water near their home, which forces them to spend hours queuing or moving to distant sources, as well as to cope with health problems due to the consumption of contaminated water. 1,800 million people use a source of water contaminated by fecal material, which puts them at risk of cholera, dysentery, typhus or polio.
Non-potable water and poor sanitary infrastructure, as well as lack of hygiene, causes around 842,000 deaths per year. Daily, 1,000 children die from these causes.
The Spanish Red Cross, as a Humanitarian Organization and promoter of the Rights of the people, and by virtue of its commitment to the most vulnerable people, carries out an extensive intervention on water within and outside our country. The Red Cross collaboration with the Marine Garbage Surveillance Program of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment is noteworthy in our country..
In addition, the Red Cross has a special device to support the population affected by natural disasters, the Emergency Response Unit (ERU, in its acronym in English) of Water and Sanitation, with capacity to supply 225,000 liters of water per day. These units are composed of specialized and previously trained professionals, available at any time of the day.
